Island Hopping in Malta

Let me start by saying that any picture you’ve seen of Malta does not even scratch the surface of depicting its beauty. This small Mediterranean island is easily one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever laid my eyes on. From the crystal-clear water to the breathtaking views, I was honestly taken aback. Aside from the radiating vibrance of the streets and shorelines, the best part of Malta was how affordable it was! Keep reading to find out how to island hop in Malta without emptying your bank account.

Our boat tour to Comino & Gozo Islands was the perfect choice for a few reasons. First, it was only £20 ($25) which was a very fair price considering all that we did. Second, it took us to all the islands we wanted to see and allowed us to get off the boat to explore and take pictures for 1-3 hours (depending on the island). Also, we managed to do all of this and be back by 5ish, which gave us time to explore Malta’s nightlife. Trust the blazing Maltese sun to suck out any amount of energy I could have used to do anything but sleep, but it’s always nice to have that option on the table.

**Tip: Get to the boat about 15 minutes early to secure a good spot!**

Crystal Lagoon

Our first stop was the Crystal Lagoon. Come prepared to swim! The boat stops here for about an hour and let’s people swim around the boat and through the surrounding caves. I’ve been on quite a few boats and I’ve never wanted to swim in the ocean so badly. This was basically me:

So for all my babes that are natural, wear wigs, or only like water in your hair on wash days, I’d recommend having a hairstyle that can survive a swim in this beautiful water.

Blue Lagoon

Our stop at the Blue Lagoon was just an hour, so we had to be pretty quick with our movements. After grabbing food at one of the many food stands, it was only right to capture this IG-famous destination. The water is so unbelievably clear that the boats actually appear to be floating.

Gozo

For the last stop, we spent about 3 hours in Gozo. For €5 per person, we did a guided tour that took us to all of the island’s major landmarks and provided a quick history lesson on each. Let me just warn you now. If you’re going to Malta during the summer and you love yourself, please get a portable fan and a hat. People love to say I’m dramatic but (in addition to the grace of God) these two things saved my life. The heat in Gozo was up there with Lagos or Dubai in the summer. The views were amazingggg but whew! You need to mentally prepare your mind for the heat that awaits you.

On the way back, you can probably take one of the many tourist shuttles that take travelers back to Sliema, St. Julian’s etc. Including food and transportation, I don’t think I spent more than £50 for this day’s unforgettable adventure. So basically if you pack a lunch to work for a week or pretend you didn’t see that millionth email from PrettyLittleThing, you can afford to plan your next trip here too!

P.S. It feels so amazing to be writing on here again! The goal is to be a lot more consistent now that uni is coming to an end. Thanks for stopping by myopenborders.com! Comment below with any exciting summer vacation plans! 😊
