6 Travel Essentials People Forget

Going on vacation is always extremely exciting. Sometimes a little too exciting. If you’re like me, you might get a bit carried away with shopping for the Instagram-worthy outfit or researching the restaurants, forgetting about the travel essentials that make life so much easier. I’ve made a list of the 6 travel essentials that I’ve learned to never travel without.

1. Facial Wipes

Being on the plane for hours can be such an enemy of hygiene. Of course, planes have (tiny) bathrooms, but it doesn’t compare to the comfort of your own bathroom. To make matters worse, the recycled air on airplanes can be bad for the skin. I’ve learned that these facial wipes are so essential for flights, especially when you can’t be bothered to put your entire skin care regimen into travel sized containers. Facial wipes are an easy way to feel refreshed, without having to squeeze into those tiny airplane bathrooms with your elbows bumping into walls and your legs getting a little too close to the toilet. I’d definitely recommend you give these a try!

2. Portable Charger

Many people already know that this is crucial to any journey, near and far. But I think it’s still worth mentioning because I often find myself forgetting to charge mine, then carelessly relying on the charging ports on the plane. I’ve been disappointed one too many times by those faulty ports. Once the phone dies, the music, apps, ebooks die along with it. These preventable mishaps are the things that make me want to scream on those loooong international flights. Obviously, I’m being a bit dramatic, but trust me on this! You won’t regret having the portable charger, just in case. Recently, I even went so far as to get the Away Carry-On Luggage with the built-in portable charger. Those silly charging ports can never catch me slipping again.

3. Vitamin C Supplements

This one is for all the germaphobes and hypochondriacs out there. You know that mini-assessment we do of the person sitting next to you on the plane. Do they look like they’ll be hogging the armrest? Maybe they’re extremely chatty and all you want to do is SLEEP. For me, these are the least of my worries. One of the worst scenarios is approaching your seat and noticing your neighbor looks a bit under the weather. Before you know it, there’s a cough here and 2 sneezes there. I’m sure some of you are reading this like “Oh hellllll no!” This is where those vitamin C supplements come to save the day. Vitamin C is known to strengthen your immune system to fight against those nasty unwelcomed guests.

If you happen to be the sick neighbor, please don’t take it personally. I was once that gross passenger on a flight to Germany, and just know that my neighbor pulled out the surgical face mask (can you imagine?) and hand sanitizer. I don’t even blame her though. Who’s paying all that money to be sick on vacation?

4. Cardigan or Long-Sleeved Shirt

Let me tell you it’s never too hot to have a cardigan on you. Obviously, I don’t mean you should wear long-sleeved shirts in the sweltering heat of the Sahara Desert. But with high temperatures come high-powered AC. Funny enough, I am always cold during the summer months. As soon as you escape the intense heat, you are greeted by the freezing cold air-conditioned breeze. The same goes for airplanes. It doesn’t matter where you are going or where you came from – a cardigan is essential. Airplanes are usually kept at cooler temperatures to prevent certain health emergencies. Don’t be that person who is shivering in the tank top and flip flops you should have saved for your resort in Cancun!

5. Female Personal Hygiene Products

If you’re a woman, you know that our “monthly friend” likes to drop by at the most untimely moments. Even though we have an idea when she’ll come through, we may not know the exact moment. Be sure to have everything you need in an accessible place (i.e. handbag, carry-on, NOT checked-in luggage). This could help you dodge a very messy bullet.

6. Snacks!

Never rely on airplane meals to sustain you, especially if you’re a picky eater like me. A granola bar, some chips, or mini bagel thins can make a huge difference on a long flight. Plus, flights get delayed causing layovers to disappear. Make sure you have something you can eat when you’re rushing to your connecting flight. Take it from me – a somersaulting stomach is a terrible way to start your vacation.

Thank you for reading! I hope these travel essentials save some of you some unnecessary headache. Comment below with the items you don’t go on vacation without!

Jackie Aina with her Away Suitcases. These suitcases are honestly amazing!

Had to grab breakfast before my flight at Heathrow. Should’ve followed my own advice and packed a snack!

Listen, all of these are NON-NEGOTIABLES! I refuse to travel anywhere without each of these items. Snacks are my absolute must! On my way to France I had a 7 hour layover in Germany! I wasn’t interested in the food they had to offer so my somersaulting stomach was saved by some flaming hot fries! Eventually I caved and ate out, but those fries came in CLUTCH!
