In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic, tourism worldwide is obviously not where it used to be. Most travel plans have been canceled or postponed till 2021. On top of avoiding the virus, many people are probably battling severe cases of cabin fever, itching to travel, or even just leave the house more. Trust me when I say I feel you! As countries are trying to revive their tourism industries, some have devised a plan to reimburse tourists for coming to visit their country. Keep reading to find out which ones!
Japan

Japan’s “Go to Travel” Campaign provides reimbursements of upto 50% on transportation, hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and shopping. But please note that this is for domestic travel, as Japan still has an entry ban for most countries. The campaign is expected to end on January 31, 2021. Find out more here!
Sicily

If you’ve watched the news at all in the past few months, you probably know that COVID-19 hit Italy very badly. Tourism represents 13% of Italy’s GDP, and Sicily has already lost over $1 billion. This gorgeous Italian island has allotted 50 million euros to its travel reimbursement program. Their offer includes paying for one free night for every three nights booked and 50% off flights. Also, Sicily’s tourism director announced that “400,000 vouchers for discounts.” They’ll be reimbursing anyone that travels before December 2020, although some say it could run till December 2021.
Cancun, Mexico
The Cancun Hotel Association has launched its “2×1 Special” which allows travelers to buy one package and get the second free. It is being offered at Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, and Cancun. Some examples of reimbursement are buying one plane ticket, and being reimbursed for your companion’s ticket. Or paying for two nights and getting two additional nights for free!
Barbados
This is not necessarily reimbursement – more so a tourism boost, but Barbados has introduced the “12-month Welcome Stamp” which allows travelers to relocate to Barbados for 1 year and work remotely. The application requires a passport photo, a copy of your birth certificate, and answering some questions. The program also requires an expected income of at least $50,000 within the next year and costs $3000 for families and $2000 for individuals. Honestly, who wouldn’t want to look up from their work laptop and see the gorgeous blue waters of this pretty island?
Whew! These deals are so tempting, but I’m lowkey not completely sure when I’m traveling next. But how about you? Comment below with what you think about these reimbursement programs!
